In her new project, photographer Annaleen Louwes explores the legacy of her German mother, shaped by the aftermath of the Second World War. Engaging in a dialogue with her mother about the wartime past, memory, and shame, she scrutinises how being German shaped the experiences and emotions of mother and daughter while living in the Netherlands after the war. Through images and archival material, the boundary between memory and reality blurs. How does collective shame persist in the next generation? The culmination of a personal project by the artist, the investigation formed part of an eponymous exhibition in Amsterdam, now complemented by this book.
