After the Civil War, Therese Lafirme, a widow, runs a plantation in rural Louisiana. When a divorced businessman named David Hosmer purchases timber rights to her land in order to support his newly built sawmill, Lafirme struggles to balance her growing affections with her hard-earned sense of independence and deep moral convictions.
